Verizon customers living in Leesburg will be able to watch the next town council meeting from the comfort of their homes, if all goes according to plan this week.
Verizon will be activating its public access channel tomorrow, said Tami Watkins, management specialist for the town. The town will make that connection live April 5.
"Our third-party vendor can't come up until Thursday to connect the signal," Watkins said today. Between Tuesday and Thursday, Verizon customers who turn to Channel 21 will either see snow or the color bars, she said. If they still do not have a picture on Channel 21 by Friday, they might need to reset their television manually, she said.
To learn how to do the manual switch, Watkins advised calling Verizon directly, since many televisions are different. She said the change only affects Verizon subscribers; Comcast customers already have Channel 21.
Christy Reap, a spokeswoman with Verizon, confirmed the telecommunications company would be making the channel live this week, and that as long as the third-party vendor makes the switch, the channel should be visible by week's end or early next week.
Verizon customers who live outside Leesburg should ultimately be able to view the town's channel, said Lorie Flading, cable television administrative specialist for Loudoun, but the county is a few weeks behind the town.
Comcast still needs to put an interconnection into the building to allow other cable providers access, Flading said. The county's government channel and public access channel will be augmented with an education channel in the next few months, she said today.
Verizon and Open Band need access to the feed in order to air the channels, Flading said, adding that Comcast is supposed to provide that access by April 22.
