Organizers of this weekend's Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour are expecting as many as 4,000 people to participate in event that will showcase the talents of 35 painters, sculptors and craftsmen.
That level of participation would double last year's inaugural effort, which drew high marks from artists and visitors alike and was nominated for a county tourism award.
The tour itself is a drive though the countryside with stops at the various home studios where works can be viewed and purchased. Visitors get a close-up look at the varied offerings of their talented neighbors and the artists get to introduce their works to a new group of potential customers.
Suzanne DeSaix moved to Lovettsville in 1988 and has been making prints in her home studio for the past four years after taking classes at Northern Virginia Community College.
"I do think the tour will be good exposure," she said during a recent gathering of the artists at the Round Hill Arts Center that serves as the headquarters for the event. "I'm looking forward to good weather and good participation."
Kathie Radcliff, a Waterford quilter, only heard about the tour last year and is looking forward to having people visit her studio this weekend. "All the new people out here like to see what is going on."
The studios will be open form 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The tour is free and self-guided. A map can be viewed at: www.wlast.org/map.htm. Additionally, visitors will find signs at many western Loudoun intersections guiding motorists to studio sites.
The Loudoun Convention & Visitors Association, Savoir Fare, Town of Round Hill, Virginia Commission for the Arts, Robey Charitable Trust, Lizard Graphics, Round Hill Design Center are sponsors of the event.
