The League of Women Voters of Loudoun County announced today that Republican Jill Holtzman Vogel will not participate in tomorrow's scheduled debate among candidates for the 27th District Senate seat.

Tomorrow's program at 7 p.m. at the Carver Center in Purcellville will continue with Democrat Karen Schultz and Independent Donald Marro.

"The Loudoun League of Women Voters is very disappointed that the voters of Loudoun County will not get the chance to hear Jill Holtzman Vogel directly answer questions regarding issues that are important to our county," the League stated in its announcement. "Our style of forum uniquely combines the use of area reporters and editors as questioners, followed by an open microphone for members of the audience to ask questions directly to the candidates."

Vogel's cancellation because of a scheduling conflict came as a surprise to league planners, who said invitations for the forum went out in July.

Next Tuesday, the League is scheduled to hold a forum with the three candidates for Loudoun County sheriff at the Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg. Forums for county board seats are planned next month.

" Even in Winchester she is disrespecting people. She sent a representative to a forum concerned with disability issues, but it gets even worse: According to the Winchester Star, "Republican Jill Holtzman Vogel did not attend, but Susan Masters spoke on her behalf...Masters declined to answer audience questions on behalf of Holtzman Vogel. She read a statement indicating that the candidate felt a strong connection to the community, but made no further comments." Unbelievable. "

" Maybe she couldn't catch a ride from Leesburg where she was seen at a Realtors event just before the debate? "

" I am sure Ms. Holtzman feels she's a shoe in because of who she knows and knows where the money is . . . she doesn't care about the "little" people. An elephant doesn't forget and neither do we "little" people in the County. "

" It is difficult to make a case for Holtzman Vogel's reliability and credibility when she cancels out of a major debate at the very last moment. This demonstrates an extreme lack of respect for the citizens of Loudoun County, her two opponents, and the League of Women Voters (who have planned the debate for months). Perhaps she is considering dropping out of the race? "

" I suppose it would have been too much to expect her to at least explain her role in getting the Commonwealth Attorney involved in investigating Mark Tate. I think she has written Loudoun off and feels she doesn't need us in the election. "
