Morven Park Host Fall Races Saturday

The 28th Running of the Morven Park Steeplechase will be held at the International Equestrian Center at Morven Park in Leesburg Saturday, Oct. 13.

Gates open at 11 a.m. and will include at least seven races, over jumps and on the flat.

This year's event features the usual variety of vendors on site, food and beverages as well as a new option for race-goers, the Comcast Triple Play Tent. The large enclosure offers catered food, soft drinks, beer and wine all day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ticket prices for the tent are based on age and range from $80/person age 21 and up, $50/age 13 to 20, $25/age 7 to 12 and children age 6 and under are admitted free. Oriented next to the finish line, the tent offers one of the best views of the winning horse and jockey, while patrons may still view the entire course as well as the paddock where horses are tacked and jockeys mounted before a race. This tent is in addition to the event's corporate tents and Family Fun Fair area. Tickets to enter the featured area may be obtained by contacting Gia Anderson at Morven Park at 703-777-2414.

The ever popular Family Fun Fair offers pony rides, Leesburg Petting Zoo's "Zoo to You," duck pond, Animal Ambassadors exhibit, moon bounce and more to entertain children throughout the day.

Another family attraction is Amateur Jockey Gregg Ryan leading the "Family Course Walk." Those along for the stroll will get an exciting sneak preview of the life of a jockey and will see how horse and rider work together in a race. The walk will begin at noon in front of the large Steward's Stand.

Dress code for the event is casual and comfortable, with visitors encouraged to check the weather and prepare accordingly. As the event is held on the lush fields of Morven Park, flat shoes are advised.

All proceeds from the race will benefit the restoration of the Morven Park mansion. General admission on race day is $10/person and children 6 and under are admitted free. Post time for the first race is 1:30 p.m.
