Just before Gov. Timothy Kaine (D) spoke to a crowd gathered at Farmwell Station Middle School Monday night, he met with Andy Johnston to talk about the money recently raised for Loudoun Cares.

As part of the state budget adopted in 2007, Loudoun Cares received an $87,500 grant, through legislation sponsored by Sen. Mark Herring (D-33).

As a match grant, Loudoun Cares was responsible for raising an equal amount of money as it had received. Executive Director Johnston went even further than that, however, raising $100,000 from local businesses. N.E.W. Customer Service Companies and Inova Loudoun Hospital each donated $30,000, the Telos Corporation contributed $25,000, Howard Hughes Medical Institute donated $10,000 and The Community Foundation of the National Capital Region contributed $5,000.

Monday night everyone gathered in Farmwell Station's library to thank the governor and each of the sponsors for the work they did in fundraising. The money will help jump start the purchase of land on which Loudoun Cares hopes to build a nonprofit, multi-tenant center in Loudoun where clients could find a variety of information sources and services under one roof, Johnston said. He hopes to house at least 12 of the county's health and human service nonprofits at the center.

"As a community leader, I know we all have to work together to solve these problems," Herring said after the meeting. "That is especially true when we are trying to strengthen the safety net for residents."
