The quest for a Leesburg dog park has not ended. Although town council members voted several weeks ago to no longer pursue a 28.8-acre site off Old Waterford Road for the facility, town staff has been exploring the feasibility of other locations both in and out of the town.

Bill Ference, acting co-director of parks and recreation, presented a list of 20 sites to council members at their work session last night and said that the town was specifically evaluating eight as serious possibilities. Among these include three locations at Ida Lee Park, an area at Robinson Park on Plaza Street, a site adjacent to Freedom Park, which is owned by the Peterson Companies, and a site at Oatlands Plantation south of town.

"None of these is slam dunk site," Ference said. "But every one has a possibility."

Ference vowed to return in two weeks with a recommendation on how to proceed, including looking at an interim site at one of the parcels which would only cost an additional $7,000 to implement above the $18,000 still left in the Capital Improvements Program for a dog park.

Council members sounded optimism about the project's progress and Councilman Fernando "Marty" Martinez said he really liked the idea of an interim site at Robinson Park.

"I think Robinson is a good interim solution that has the parking we need and gives the friends group [that has formed to help monitor and raise funds for a dog park] the opportunity to raise money," for a permanent site, Martinez said.

Councilman Ken Reid said he wanted the dog park to stay in the town and expressed concern about the possibility of pursuing a site at Oatlands Plantation, which even Ference said would require a partnership with the county to implement.

Ference said he will appear at council's work session on Monday, April 21 to present his recommendations in advance of the budget public hearing set to occur at council's regularly scheduled meeting the following night.

" That works for me as well waya, but lets also insist that there is a healthy fine for those who do not clean up behind their dogs. Start at $100 and go to $500 for the second and subsequent offenses. I for one am tired ot these ittle presents that are left in my yard by those who walk their dogs in the dead of the night and do not clean up behind them. And a simliar fine fror those who drop off their Starbucks cups and soda cans as well. At least at a dog park there would be clean up and trash cans for people to dispose of their trash and their pets leaving into. Everyone knows this town has become an eyesore in the last six years with trash everywhere except for one day/weekend a year. "

" Maybe "donkey" would be willing to finance the dog park and act as the dog park's custodian for free. What do you think? Time to step up to the plate, "donkey." "

" I think dog owners should actually "walk" their dogs, instead of letting them get exercise running around a park while the owners sit around with their giant Starbucks lattes in hand. That way human and animal all get the exercise they need and we don't waste money on something unnecessary. "

" Maybe we can have a dog park on your front lawn? Might be nice to actually have a fence, don't you think? "

" In a time of fiscal problems, increasing taxes to pay for important services, it seems so absurd to spend tax payer money on a dog park. As much as I would enjoy letting my dog interact with other dogs, this is NOT the time to be considering this project. This is a project that is better suited to tax surplus years (provided the Gov't fails to return the extra money back to those that donated it in the first place). "

" They want MORE funds in addition to the $18,000? I want my taxes to stop escalating and if we need to cut, this dog thing needs to be the first to go. "
