Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center is hosting the first community theater musical to grace its stage in the newly renovated facility, Aurora Studio Theatre's Guys and Dolls, opening at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. James Campanella directs the talented cast assisted by musical director Diane El-Shafey, choreographers Carolyn Christensen and Amy Lanham and fight choreographer Terry Smith.
The story, originally penned by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, tells the tale of some small-time gamblers who are encouraged to give up graft and quit the evils of gambling. They are confronted both by members of the "Save-a-Soul Mission," an organization similar to the Salvation Army, and local policeman Lt. Brannigan, who considers it his duty to thwart the gambling gang's activities. In an attempt to secure a hefty deposit to hold their illegal "floating craps game" in the local Biltmore Hotel garage, hazard-lover Nathan Detroit bets high-roller Sky Masterson a cool $1,000 that he must take a "doll" of Nathan's choice out to dinner in Havana, Cuba. Nathan chooses Miss Sarah Brown; a straight-walking sergeant of the Save-a-Soul Mission, hoping Sky will lose the bet and forfeit the much-needed $1,000. Many songs and dances ensue as the audience has the pleasure of following Sky and Sarah's romance as it unfolds, not to mention Nathan's tribulations with his own "doll," nightclub singer Miss Adelaide.
The show features several well-known songs written by Frank Loesser, including Luck be a Lady, I'll Know, A Bushel and a Peck, If I Were a Bell and many more.
Performances will continue evenings at 8 p.m. Nov. 7, 8, 14 and 15, with Sunday matin/es at 3 p.m. Nov. 2, 9 and 16.
