LCDS, TJ Grad Named Rhodes Scholar

Lucas Brown, a graduate of Loudoun County Day School and the Thomas Jefferson School of Technology's class of 2005, has been selected as a Rhodes Scholar to enter a masters of Philosophy in Economics program at Oxford University in England.

Brown's selection as one of 32 students to receive the honor, from an applicant pool of 769, is the latest in a long line of academic accolades. In 2008, he was awarded $5,000 as a Morris K. Udall scholar for environmental leadership. In 2005 he was selected as a National Merit Scholar and received $2,000, and he maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout his high school career, earning him a Loudoun Excellence in Achievement Award.

A senior at Oberlin College in Ohio, Brown was featured in a New York Times article for he and his fellow classmates work with Seed House, their living space that served as a real life demonstration on energy conservation. Brown hopes to study how the British are already working to reduce energy waste through "cap-and-trade", price cap utility regulation, and congestion pricing practices.

In a letter to Randy Hollister, headmaster of LCDS, Brown thanked him "for all of your incredible support" during his time at the school.

"The school really gave me tremendous opportunities that allowed me to get even close to a point like this," Brown said in the letter.
