The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office has identified the man who entered a Lovettsville area home early this morning and shot the two residents before taking his own life as Barry L. Gates.
According to authorities, the 45-yea-old Leesburg resident entered the home in the 3900 block Irish Corner Road around 2 a.m. and began shooting. Both the male and female residents of the home were shot. The victims fled from the home to a neighbor's house where they called for help.
Gates was the estranged husband of the female victim.
When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, the adult male victim was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is listed in guarded condition and is expected to recover. The adult female victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment on non-life-threatening injuries.
After the victims fled, the suspect barricaded himself in the home. The Sheriff's Emergency Response Team and the Loudoun County Bomb Squad also were called to the scene. After Gates ceased communications with negotiators, the SERT members entered the home and found him dead. Just after 6:30 a.m. the sheriff's office announced that suspect had committed suicide.
More information on the incident will be posted as it becomes available.
